Dogparks of Greater St. Louis

History

Over 25 years ago

Forest Park is host to an informal off-leash group meeting on weekend mornings. This is not an official Dog Park and is not fenced. Multiple other unofficial off-leash group meetings going on throughout the St. Louis area over the years.

1997

Central West End’s Maryland and Boyle Dog Park is opened by private ownership

April 2001

Incorporation of Dogparks Of Greater St. Louis as a non-profit organization with the mission to establish fenced-in, off-leash dog recreational areas within the St. Louis area.

February 2002 Central West End’s Maryland and Boyle Dog Park is closed due to overpopulation with small sized area.
August 2002

Central West End’s Maryland and Taylor Dog Park is opened thanks to Paris Bouchard and Jennifer Greenberg.

Fall 2002

A crackdown on the enforcement of the leash law dissolves the unofficial group meeting of dogs in Forest Park. Other park areas follow suit and getting tougher to find a place you can let your dog run off-leash without getting ticketed.

November 2002

University City Dog Play Area (the small dog area) opens under the leadership of Bert Sternbenz and U City People for Dogs in cooperation with University Cit y. The land is owned by University City and had been used temporarily for MSD equipment.

September 2003

The Shaw Neighborhood Dog Park opens under the leadership of Susan Raney in cooperation with St. Louis City and the Shaw Neighborhood Association. The land is LRA and leased for $1 from St. Louis City.

November 2003

The Quail Ridge Dog Park in St. Charles County opens thanks to Jan Myers suggestion to the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation. This dedicated recreation area (DRA) is in a newly developed park.

October 2004

Central West End’s Maryland and Taylor Dog Park moves to Olive and Taylor and is named Lister Dog Park. Privately owned land.
